What is Chiropractic Care?

The Body’s Innate Healing

Chiropractic philosophy, art, and science is based on the concept that the body is innately healing. It knows when to breathe deeper, sleep harder, and heal from within without conscious input. Your body is continually adapting, changing, and integrating new information. It has to adjust to new environments, stressors, and emotions every moment of the day. With every emotion our bodies express a physical response. For instance when you’re sad or upset you produce tears as a physical release of that emotion. When you’re happy and joyous you generate laughter. Your all-encompassing nervous system controls these functions and processes, which frees up some of that brain space for things like remembering to turn off the oven, blow out the candles, and unplug the curling iron. Chiropractic care is a tool in your tool belt for adapting to life’s stressors.

The Chiropractic Adjustment

Chiropractic adjustments focus on global and local distortions and dis-ease in your physical body to allow for better flow of information. This information is what activates a muscle cell, increases your heart rate, and signals for more or less hormone expression. It’s pain, and it’s a dialog for where your body is in space. It’s joy, and it’s sadness. You can think of it as a wave of fluid flowing within your body. Whatever the physical or emotional expression, the brain and nervous system control it. This specific information is transmitted through nerves and is the key to activating and transcending cascades in the physical body. A specific chiropractic adjustment is a gentle force, done by hand, into a joint of the spine or an extremity. It is addressing biomechanical dysfunctions within the skeletal system. After an adjustment is given, the rest of the work is up to you. Your body is given a chance to reorganize, adapt, and reintegrate information. Your body is constantly working to attain homeostasis, which simply means, balance. With balance there is a perfect dance of stability and flexibility, cortisol and melatonin, estrogen and testosterone, ebb and flow.
